Dao Nguyen, a digital media executive and former Chief Product and Technology Officer at BuzzFeed, was elected to the Supervisory Board of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) by association members, and subsequently elected by the Supervisory Board to the Executive Board. The appointment fills an existing vacancy on the boards, bringing more than 30 years of media expertise in data analytics, product development, and audience growth to the global news organization.

Global Leadership Experience Across Digital Publishing

Nguyen’s career spans more than three decades of leadership across prominent digital publishing and news organizations. Prior to joining The New York Times in 2025 to lead digital advertising product development, she spent over 11 years at BuzzFeed. During her tenure there as Publisher and Chief Product and Technology Officer, she managed product, engineering, analytics, and machine learning operations across BuzzFeed, Tasty, HuffPost, and Complex. She directed teams of up to 450 personnel operating across eight countries. Her executive background also includes serving as CEO of Le Monde Interactif, the digital publisher of lemonde.fr, as well as holding senior product management roles at Dow Jones. Alongside these operational posts, she serves on the board of the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF).

Strategic Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Newsrooms

WAN-IFRA Chief Executive Officer Stig Ørskov noted that Nguyen’s background bridges technical acumen with practical execution in audience development and digital monetization. According to Ørskov, her current work at The New York Times focusing on digital advertising products addresses an area of critical importance for the publishing industry. Her track record centers on employing technology and generative AI to reinforce journalism rather than substitute it, an approach that offers a valuable perspective for WAN-IFRA members managing a period of profound operational transformation.

“Dao combines deep technical expertise with an exceptional understanding of how product development, data, AI and digital advertising can support audience growth and sustainable journalism,” said Stig Ørskov, Chief Executive Officer of WAN-IFRA, pointing to her leadership experience across influential media organizations.

Navigating Industry Transformation

Publishers worldwide face ongoing economic and technological pressures regarding how to structure digital products, monetize content, and responsibly deploy emerging tools. Nguyen acknowledged these industry-wide challenges following her election to the dual board positions.

“I’m honored to join WAN-IFRA’s Supervisory and Executive Boards,” said Dao Nguyen. “Publishers everywhere are grappling with how to harness data, product and AI to serve their audiences and sustain their journalism. I look forward to contributing to that conversation and to supporting WAN-IFRA’s members as they navigate this moment of transformation.”

WAN-IFRA’s Global Institutional Framework

Operating with formal representative status at the United Nations, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe, WAN-IFRA serves as the global trade association for news publishers. The organization derives its authority from an extensive international network of news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, representing 80 national association members encompassing more than 20,000 publications across 120 countries. Its core mission is safeguarding the rights of journalists and independent publishers worldwide while delivering technical expertise and business services designed to help media enterprises innovate and prosper in an increasingly digital environment.

As media houses adapt to changing audience habits and automated content distribution models, publishers seeking institutional compliance, governance advice, or technical restructuring can ensure long-term operational resilience. The inclusion of executive expertise like Nguyen’s on WAN-IFRA’s governing boards underscores the sector’s continued focus on sustainable digital infrastructure as global newsrooms face ongoing technological change.
