Daniele Adani on Fiorentina vs Inter, Italian Football & Serie A Future

March 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Former Italian footballer Daniele Adani has criticized the state of Italian football, highlighting a perceived tolerance for refereeing controversy and a lack of pace in domestic play. Adani, speaking to Florentine newspapers on March 21, 2026, too weighed in on the upcoming match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan.

Regarding the Serie A clash at the Franchi stadium, Adani anticipates a focused response from Inter following a recent dip in form. “I expect Inter’s recent dip in form will turn into intense focus and a desire to reclaim their status,” he told Corriere Fiorentino. He also expressed expectations for Fiorentina, hoping to notice a repeat of their second-half performance against Milan, characterized by “focus, courage and goal-scoring opportunities.” Adani suggested Fiorentina may have underestimated the challenges of team building, stating, “Fiorentina have underestimated the problems and thought that simply building the team would be enough to get the job done.”

Adani’s comments extended to a broader critique of Italian football culture, specifically regarding attitudes towards officiating. He argued that Italians “get more enjoyment out of the refereeing chaos; we like the banter, the shortcuts,” and that media coverage contributes to this dynamic. He contrasted this with the rapid development of talent elsewhere, citing 18-year-old Bayern Munich player Lennart Karl as an example of the pace of progress in other footballing nations.

In a separate interview with La Repubblica, Adani reiterated his desire to see a strong performance from Fiorentina, urging the team to “take control of the game, galvanised by their recent results, respecting the opposition but showing pride and courage.” He acknowledged that the team had a gradual start to the season, carrying a “non inizio” for months, making it difficult to establish unity. He praised coach Vincenzo Vanoli’s work, particularly in improving the team’s physical and mental aspects, essential for a relegation battle. Adani emphasized that Fiorentina’s primary objective should be maintaining their Serie A status.

Adani also touched on Fiorentina’s participation in the Conference League, suggesting it should be viewed as a stepping stone rather than a source of intense pressure. “I would live the cup as a slight step to take,” he said, adding that all efforts should currently be focused on securing safety in the league. He also identified Silvio Baldini as a promising talent within the Italian Under-21 system, describing him as “the free agent within the system; sometimes magic happens.”

Adani also named De Zerbi, Maresca, Xavi and Thiago Motta as among the best managers currently available, expressing regret that Thiago Motta has not been given more time to prove himself, describing him as a “visionary.”
