dancing Defies Parkinson’s: Berkelland Café Hosts Uplifting Dance Afternoon

NEEDE, Netherlands – In a powerful demonstration of the therapeutic potential of dance, Parkinson Café Berkelland is hosting a special dance afternoon for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease on Thursday, September 11th. The event promises not just an enjoyable social gathering, but a chance to experience the remarkable benefits of rhythmic movement.

The afternoon will feature guided dances led by Saskia ter Haar, who has been facilitating dance sessions for people with Parkinson’s for over 12 years.Participants are encouraged to attend with a partner – a spouse, friend, or neighbor – creating a supportive and inclusive habitat.

“we dance a quickstep, an english waltz, or a tango – whatever feels right,” explains ter Haar. “The rhythm of the music stimulates the movements. Often, muscle memory kicks in and past dance steps resurface. If not, I adapt the steps to ensure everyone can participate and enjoy the experience.”

The event is free to attend, and attendees will be welcomed with complimentary coffee or tea. Additional refreshments will be available for purchase, and a voluntary contribution towards room rental is gratefully accepted.

The Growing Recognition of Dance Therapy

Research increasingly supports the use of dance and movement therapies in managing Parkinson’s symptoms. The rhythmic and repetitive nature of dance can improve gait, balance, and coordination, while also boosting mood and cognitive function.
