Dana White Clarifies UFC Heavyweight Title Picture After Tom Aspinall Vacates Belt

September 19, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

UFC CEO Dana White confirmed that interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane will not be automatically elevated to undisputed status following Tom Aspinall vacating his title. Speaking to Sportsnet, White stated that Gane still has to fight to claim the undisputed belt, with a new matchup expected to be announced soon.

Tom Aspinall officially vacated the heavyweight title after remaining sidelined due to an eye injury sustained during his championship bout against Gane at UFC 321 last October.

White addressed the vacancy and the path forward for the division during his interview with Sportsnet.

“Does it make him the undisputed champion? No. He’s still gotta fight,” White told Sportsnet, explaining that Gane must earn the undisputed crown inside the Octagon. White added that a bout for Gane will be booked shortly to determine the definitive titleholder.

“We’ll see how this whole thing plays out with Aspinall,” White stated. “Ciryl will fight, and we’ll see who becomes the champion. I mean, this isn’t the first time this has ever happened. It’s happening right now with Valentina Shevchenko too, so this is nothing now. This happens sometimes. It’s unfortunate; it’s not the best outcome, but it is what it is.”

Contender Landscape and Ranking Implications

With Gane positioned at the top of the division, the matchmaking calculus involves several high-ranking contenders. Alexander Volkov occupies the No. 2 spot in the official heavyweight media rankings, immediately behind Gane, while Sergei Pavlovich holds the No. 3 position, according to data outlined by MMA Junkie.

Another prominent option for Gane’s next appearance is No. 4 contender Josh Hokit. Pereira recently posted a photo following a meeting with UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell, sparking intense speculation regarding an immediate rematch. Since their encounter at UFC Freedom 250, Pereira has voiced strong objections regarding the bout’s officiating, pointing specifically to multiple strikes landing to the back of his head during the contest.
