Dan Sullivan: Champion for Alaska’s Small Businesses & Tax Cuts

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

ANCHORAGE, AK – U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan addressed the inaugural Alaska Young Republicans State Convention in Anchorage on Saturday, January 10, 2026, emphasizing the importance of federal policies supporting the state’s small businesses, according to attendees and reports from the event.

Alaska’s economy is overwhelmingly reliant on small businesses, with over 99% of businesses falling into that category and employing more than half of the state’s workforce. Sullivan’s remarks focused on recent legislative efforts aimed at providing tax relief and stability for these enterprises, a topic he has consistently championed throughout his time in the Senate.

Denny DeWitt, a Juneau resident and government relations consultant who previously represented Alaska’s small businesses as the state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, highlighted Sullivan’s accessibility to business owners. “Sen. Sullivan always has an open door to Alaska’s small business owners,” DeWitt stated.

Sullivan’s support for the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was a key point of discussion. The legislation included a 20% qualified business income deduction for many small businesses structured as partnerships, S corporations, and sole proprietorships. This deduction allowed business owners to retain a larger portion of their earnings for reinvestment in their operations and communities.

More recently, Sullivan played a role in the passage of the 2025 Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which made the 20% small business deduction permanent. The act also preserved provisions allowing businesses to immediately deduct the cost of capital investments, such as equipment and machinery. These provisions are particularly significant in Alaska, where high operating costs and substantial capital investments are common.

According to Sullivan’s official Senate website, he has consistently advocated for strengthening America’s strategic posture in the Arctic, pushing for investments in infrastructure and military readiness. This focus on Arctic development aligns with the needs of many Alaska-based small businesses involved in resource extraction, transportation, and related industries.

The Anchorage Young Republicans, in a Facebook post, affirmed their support for Sullivan, stating he has been an “Alaska-first Senator and a consistent fighter for our state.”

Sullivan, a Marine Corps veteran who served as Alaska’s Attorney General and Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources before entering the Senate in 2015, has positioned himself as a strong advocate for Alaska’s economic interests in Washington. His continued focus on small business tax policy reflects a commitment to the state’s unique economic landscape.

The Senate is currently scheduled to consider further legislation related to energy policy and infrastructure development in the coming weeks, issues that are expected to have a significant impact on Alaska’s small businesses.
