Dan Beard Council Statement on Family Scouting

From andrew Zahn, Scout Executive, Dan ‌Beard Council, Scouting America

Dear Scouting Families and ⁣Friends,

Dan Beard Council remains dedicated to providing a high-quality Scouting experience for all youth we⁤ serve.

Recently,Scouting America announced the option for councils to implement “Family Troops,” a co-educational troop structure. Following thorough consideration, the Dan Beard Council Executive Committee and Board ⁤of Directors have decided not to adopt this model at this time.

This decision ‌is based on four primary concerns. First, current research does not demonstrate that co-ed troops provide equivalent or superior ⁤youth growth outcomes compared to the established single-gender model. Second, clear national guidelines regarding youth protection protocols within a co-ed troop surroundings are still‍ pending. Third, there is currently no established support system to facilitate a accomplished transition for existing single-gender troops. limited information exists on effectively and consistently delivering the Scouting program within a co-ed troop structure.

Dan Beard Council currently utilizes a “linked troop” model. This allows chartered organizations to sponsor both boys’ and girls’ troops, enabling resource sharing and opportunities for joint ‌service projects‌ and special events, while maintaining separate⁣ meetings and programs tailored to the specific needs of each group.

We believe this ‍approach best supports youth growth, leadership development, and confidence building. Research and experience suggest that boys and girls often benefit from different learning environments during‍ adolescence. Single-gender troops allow Scouts to progress at their own pace, build‌ strong friendships, and assume leadership roles in a supportive setting.

This model balances inclusivity and⁢ teamwork with a program designed‍ to best fit each Scout’s individual needs.

Dan Beard Council will continue to monitor national guidance on co-ed Scouting with transparency and careful consideration, guided by the values of our community. Should future evidence demonstrate that a co-ed model⁣ could be implemented safely and effectively within our council’s demographics, we will re-evaluate this ‍decision.

we welcome your‍ feedback. Please share your thoughts using the link⁢ below, and we will⁤ respond as quickly as possible.

Dan Beard Council remains committed to preparing youth for life through leadership, service, and⁢ adventure, fostering confident and capable individuals who will strengthen our communities for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Andrew Zahn
