Dallas: Man Detained with Ammo Near Ken Paxton Election Party

March 4, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Dallas police detained a man Tuesday evening near the hotel hosting an election watch party for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, recovering a significant quantity of ammunition from a vehicle lacking license plates. The suspect, found wearing a mask and camouflage clothing, was taken into custody, though his identity and the specific charges he may face remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.

The detention occurred as Paxton, a Republican, was celebrating his primary victory in the race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by John Cornyn. Paxton is seeking to secure the Republican nomination for the November 2026 election.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of Paxton, who is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the city of Dallas over police funding. Paxton filed a lawsuit against Dallas city officials on February 16, 2026, alleging they have failed to comply with Proposition U, a public safety measure approved by voters in November 2024. The lawsuit claims the city is not adequately funding the Dallas Police Department and failed to conduct a mandatory third-party review of DPD compensation.

Proposition U mandates that 50% of all new annual revenue be directed toward police and fire pensions and requires the city to maintain a minimum of 4,000 police officers. Paxton’s lawsuit names Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert and Chief Financial Officer Jack Ireland Jr. As defendants, accusing them of under-calculating available funds for public safety by as much as $159 million – reporting $61 million in excess revenue when, according to Paxton, the figure should be $220 million.

The timing of the incident and the lawsuit has drawn attention, particularly given Paxton’s focus on law and order during his campaign. In a press release announcing the lawsuit, Paxton stated, “I filed this lawsuit to ensure that the City of Dallas fully funds law enforcement, upholds public safety, and is accountable to its constituents.”

Dallas police have not released any information connecting the detained individual to Paxton’s political activities or the lawsuit. The department has stated that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be provided as they develop into available.
