Dallas Cowboys Franchise Tag George Pickens: Contract Details & Impact

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

The Dallas Cowboys have applied the franchise tag to wide receiver George Pickens, the team announced Friday, ensuring his continued presence in the Cowboys’ offense for the upcoming season. The non-exclusive designation allows Pickens to negotiate with other teams, but the Cowboys would have the right to match any offer or receive draft compensation.

The franchise tag guarantees Pickens a salary of $27.3 million for the 2026 season, according to NFL.com. Negotiations for a long-term contract extension remain possible, though potentially complicated by the existing contract of fellow Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb, who currently earns $34 million annually.

Pickens enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, recording 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl invitation and recognition as a second-team All-Pro selection. He was acquired by the Cowboys prior to the 2025 season from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who originally drafted him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft after his collegiate career at the University of Georgia.

The decision to franchise Pickens comes as the Cowboys also navigate contract discussions with linebacker Micah Parsons, according to Yahoo Sports, potentially influencing the team’s overall financial strategy.

The use of the non-exclusive franchise tag allows Pickens to test the open market, but the Cowboys retain the ability to retain his services by matching any competing offer. If Pickens signs an offer sheet with another team, Dallas will have five days to decide whether to match it.
