Dallas Cowboys Rookie Marshawn Kneeland dies at 24
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has died at the age of 24, the team announced Wednesday. The cause of death was not promptly disclosed.
Kneeland, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had appeared in 18 career games for the Cowboys, recording 26 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, and one pass defended. He recently scored a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday, recovering a blocked punt in the end zone.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of Marshawn Kneeland,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. “Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice, and every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit, and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words. My heart aches for his family, his teammates, and everyone who loved him, and I hope they feel the support of the entire football community during this unimaginable time.”
The Cowboys selected Kneeland,a Grand Rapids,Michigan native,with the 56th overall pick in the 2024 draft. He played in 11 games during his rookie season and seven in 2025. Before joining the Cowboys, Kneeland attended Western Michigan University from 2019, where he recorded 149 tackles, 13 sacks, and three forced fumbles in 38 games. He nearly transferred to Colorado to play for Deion Sanders in 2022 but ultimately remained at Western Michigan.
Prior to his collegiate career, Kneeland excelled at Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan, setting school records for tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks. He was a team captain and also competed in track and field, winning a regional championship in the 400 meter and earning all-conference honors in high jump.
The NFL Players Association also released a statement, saying they were “deeply saddened” by Kneeland’s passing and that his “impact on those around him was immeasurable.” The institution stated it was working to support players during this challenging time.
Dallas is currently in its bye week, with their next game scheduled for November 17th.
