Da Costa Wins Breathless Madrid E-Prix | Formula E Report
King Felipe VI of Spain was among the spectators at the Circuito de Madrid Jarama on Saturday as António Félix da Costa secured a thrilling victory in the CUPRA Raval Madrid E-Prix, marking his second consecutive win in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
The race, described as an “instant classic,” saw da Costa, driving for Jaguar TCS Racing, narrowly defeat teammate Nick Cassidy, with Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein finishing a close third. The final gap between the top four drivers was less than a second, according to Formula E officials.
Da Costa, who started in third position, strategically utilized the Attack Mode and Pit Boost to gain the lead, holding off a late charge from Cassidy. The Portuguese driver’s victory comes after his win in Jeddah last month, solidifying his position in the championship standings.
The race featured several key moments, including an early incident involving Nyck de Vries of Mahindra, who collided with Wehrlein’s Porsche, resulting in a five-second penalty. Pepe Martí, driving for CUPRA KIRO, briefly led the race to the delight of the home crowd before being overtaken by da Costa.
The grandstands surrounding the Circuito de Madrid Jarama were packed with fans, and the event drew significant attention, with King Felipe VI in attendance, according to reports from the race.
Following the Madrid E-Prix, Pascal Wehrlein maintains the lead in the Drivers’ Championship, holding an 11-point advantage over Edoardo Mortara. Da Costa’s win has propelled him to fourth place in the standings.
Jaguar TCS Racing is closing the gap on Porsche in both the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ Championships, trailing by just four and three points, respectively. The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will continue with Rounds 7 & 8 in Berlin on May 2nd and 3rd.
