Czech Republic Fuel Price Update: Gasoline Declines as Diesel Fluctuates

June 5, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Prague, June 5, 2026 — The Czech Ministry of Finance has imposed new maximum retail prices for gasoline and diesel effective Friday evening, capping the cost of fuel amid persistent volatility in global energy markets and localized price spikes at domestic service stations. As of midnight, the maximum allowable price for 95-octane gasoline will be 41.89 CZK per liter (including VAT), while diesel fuel is capped at 39.97 CZK per liter, according to a statement released by the ministry on Thursday afternoon.

The new limits—announced through Government Regulation No. 79/2026—represent a tightening of controls introduced just two weeks earlier, when the ministry first capped prices to address “unjustified profit margins” at select stations, particularly along major highways. The latest adjustment follows a week of fluctuating wholesale prices and a government decision to reduce the excise tax on diesel by 1.939 CZK per liter, equivalent to a 2.35 CZK reduction per liter after VAT. The tax cut, combined with a mandated 3 CZK-per-liter cap on dealer margins, aims to stabilize retail prices ahead of the weekend, when demand typically spikes.

Ministry officials emphasized that the caps are not permanent but part of a three-day sliding window mechanism, with prices recalculated daily based on a weighted average of wholesale indices from ČEPRO, ORLEN, and MOL, plus a fixed margin. The system, which began June 1, is designed to prevent “localized price gouging” while allowing for market adjustments. Without these interventions, the ministry estimated that gasoline could have reached 46.19 CZK per liter and diesel 46.62 CZK per liter by Friday.

Regional Disparities and Public Response

While the national caps apply uniformly, regional variations in fuel costs persist. Data from Chrudimský deník indicates that some areas—particularly in northern Bohemia—have seen prices drop more sharply than others, though the Chrudim region remains outside the lowest-cost brackets. The discrepancy reflects differences in transportation logistics and local competition among fuel distributors. A survey by Peníze.cz found that diesel prices have fallen by up to 2 CZK per liter nationwide over the past week, while gasoline prices have declined by 1.80 CZK per liter, though not uniformly across stations.

Consumer advocacy groups have welcomed the measures but warned that the caps alone may not resolve deeper structural issues, such as the concentration of fuel retailing in the hands of a few major players. “The government’s intervention is necessary, but it’s a short-term fix,” said Jan Novák, a spokesperson for the Czech Automobile Club (ČAM), in a statement. “We need long-term reforms to ensure fair competition and transparency in pricing.” The ministry has not yet commented on potential legislative changes but has reiterated its call for stations to “voluntarily” adhere to prices below the maximum limits.

Broader Economic Context

The Czech Republic’s fuel price controls come as part of a broader European trend to mitigate the impact of geopolitical tensions on energy costs. According to the ministry, the latest adjustments are intended to “dampen the shock of global price increases” while addressing domestic distortions. The move follows similar interventions in neighboring countries, including Poland and Slovakia, where governments have also imposed temporary price ceilings on fuel.

Economists note that the Czech Republic’s approach differs from some EU peers in its reliance on sliding-scale mechanisms rather than fixed subsidies. The ministry’s decision to reduce diesel taxes—while maintaining higher margins for gasoline—reflects a targeted response to transport sector pressures, where diesel remains critical for logistics and agriculture. However, critics argue that the tax cut may disproportionately benefit commercial fleets over private consumers.

The latest price adjustments take effect at midnight Friday and will remain in place until June 8 at 24:00, after which the ministry will reassess conditions. No further announcements are scheduled, though officials have indicated that the government will monitor wholesale trends closely in the coming days.
