Czech Railways Retire Iconic Bck Coaches From Regular Service

July 9, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

České dráhy (ČD) have officially removed their B-series passenger carriages, characterized by their iconic brown artificial leather seats, from regular scheduled service. The national rail operator confirmed that these legacy cars, which served as a staple of the Czech railway network for decades, are no longer part of the daily operating fleet, marking the end of an era for regional and long-distance transport in the country.

## The End of the “Béčko” Era
The B-series carriages, colloquially known as “béčka,” were primarily manufactured in the 1970s and 1980s. For generations of passengers, the distinctive brown leatherette upholstery and manual door mechanisms defined the experience of rail travel in the Czech Republic. According to reports from the industry portal Zdopravy.cz, the withdrawal of these cars from regular service concludes a long-term modernization strategy aimed at replacing aging rolling stock with modern, air-conditioned units such as the InterJet and RegioPanter trains.

While these carriages are now absent from standard timetabled routes, they remain part of the national operator’s reserve fleet. These units are periodically deployed as reinforcements during periods of high demand, such as the peak summer travel season or during major public holidays, provided they meet current technical safety standards.

## Modernization and Fleet Standards
The transition away from B-series carriages aligns with České dráhy’s broader efforts to improve passenger comfort and accessibility. Modern trains now offer features that were absent in the legacy fleet, including low-floor boarding for passengers with reduced mobility, Wi-Fi connectivity, electronic reservation systems, and climate control.

The operator has systematically phased out these older units as newer acquisitions arrived. The investment in new rolling stock has been a central pillar of the company’s recent capital expenditure, supported by both national funding and European Union infrastructure grants.

## Legacy and Future Use
Despite their removal from daily operations, the B-series cars retain a significant role in the heritage sector. České dráhy continues to maintain select carriages for special historical train events and museum-related operations. These events often attract rail enthusiasts interested in the technical history of the state-owned railway network.

The company has not announced a final decommissioning date for the remaining reserve units. Their ongoing presence in the fleet is now subject to the maintenance requirements of the remaining operational stock and the availability of newer carriages to cover emergency capacity needs.
