Paul Weller Encourages Cyclist’s Sobriety Journey After Vesuvius Trek
Tunstall cyclist Mark James received an unexpected boost of encouragement from music icon Paul Weller following a challenging bike ride up Mount Vesuvius, undertaken as part of James’s commitment to maintaining his sobriety. weller, himself 15 years sober, acknowledged James’s efforts and wished him luck on future adventures, according to James.
James has been tackling extreme cycling challenges to provide focus and purpose as he continues his journey away from alcohol.His recent Vesuvius trek, and the subsequent conversation with Weller, underscores the importance of support networks and positive role models in overcoming addiction and maintaining mental wellbeing. The encounter highlights a shared understanding of the ongoing effort required for sustained recovery.
James explained he often shares his story to inspire others facing similar struggles. “But when someone like that encourages you – and he knows what he’s talking about, he’s 15 years sober,” he said.
The cyclist’s ride also served to raise awareness for M.A.T.E. (Men And Their Emotions),a support network that aided James during his battle with depression. He successfully completed the bike ride and is now setting his sights on conquering Mount Etna in 2026,alongside a goal of completing 35 ascents of Yr wyddfa (Snowdon) before the year ends.
“You’ve got to be well to achieve your goal,” James stated. “So it helps maintain your mental health and your sobriety.”
