Iowa’s Cycling and Trail Network Fuels $150 Million Economic Engine,New Study Reveals
A new study released by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and conducted by Scioto Analysis demonstrates the significant economic impact of cycling and trail use across all 99 Iowa counties. The research, supported by the Iowa DOT, shows recreational cyclists contribute over $150 million annually to Polk County’s economy, with substantial benefits extending to even the most rural areas of the state.
The study builds upon initial research from 2012 and highlights the widespread economic benefits of investing in bicycle and trail infrastructure. Forty percent of recreational cyclists ride at least twice a month, generating over $500,000 in annual spending in counties like Adams, and $25 million each in Dallas and Black Hawk counties, impacting numerous industries. The findings underscore the role of cycling and trails in both local economies and workforce development throughout Iowa.
Researchers from Scioto Analysis will present the full study findings at the Iowa Bike & trails Summit in Cedar Falls on October 9 and 10.More information about the study can be found on the Iowa Bicycle Coalition website: https://iowabicyclecoalition.org/economic-impact-of-bicycling/ and registration for the summit is available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2025-iowa-bike-and-trail-summit-tickets-1222190076419?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl.
