Indonesia prioritizes Cybersecurity as Digital Economy Grows, SOE Deputy Minister Warns
Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, stressed the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures as the nation’s digital economy expands, warning that the banking sector remains a prime target for cyberattacks.Speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday, Wirjoatmodjo highlighted the daily occurrence of phishing and ransomware attacks, specifically targeting popular Indonesian digital banking applications like Livin’ Mandiri, BRImo, and byond BSI.
“The moast critically important thing is for our human capital to prepare cyber troops and cyber patrols that actively safeguard our entire digital ecosystem,” Wirjoatmodjo stated. He emphasized that these threats challenge not only the nation’s security technology but also public confidence in the financial system.
Over the past five years, Indonesian banks have been actively strengthening their digital security systems. The Ministry of SOEs, in collaboration with Bank Indonesia and all Indonesian banks, has been building a thorough payment ecosystem – encompassing infrastructure, hardware, software, API integration, and security protocols – from the ground up.
Wirjoatmodjo underscored the need to integrate security measures throughout the growth process, rather than as an afterthought. He advocated for a proactive approach focused on encryption, multifactor authentication, and integrated request development governance to minimize the risks of hacking and phishing.”So, we don’t think about security after the service is delivered. instead, we build it together, embedded and integrated into the application development process,” he explained.
