Cuba Receives First Aid Ship Amid Energy Crisis & Shortages | Swissinfo.ch

March 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The first vessel in the “Nuestra América” flotilla, a fishing boat renamed Granma 2.0, arrived in Cuba today carrying humanitarian aid intended for the island’s population, which is facing a severe energy crisis and shortages of essential goods. The ship departed from Mexico with volunteers from eleven countries aboard.

The vessel is transporting approximately 30 tons of aid, including basic foodstuffs, medicine, and hygiene products, as well as 70 solar panels intended for healthcare facilities, in an effort to mitigate the effects of power outages on medical care. The arrival of the Granma 2.0 marks the culmination of weeks of organizing and fundraising by a coalition of international activists.

The Progressive International, one of the organizations coordinating the mission, has accused the Trump administration of “strangling the island, cutting off fuel, flights, and critical supplies for survival.” A statement from the organization further warned that “the consequences are lethal for newborns and their parents, for the elderly and the sick.” The flotilla intends to demonstrate “solidarity with the Cuban people,” according to organizers.

The Nuestra América Convoy was initially conceived as a response to escalating U.S. Economic pressure on Cuba, including restrictions on fuel, and supplies. UN experts have characterized the U.S. Executive order on Cuba as a “serious violation of international law and a grave threat to a democratic and equitable international order,” as reported in February 2026.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez personally greeted the arrival of the convoy on March 21st, 2026, as more than 600 activists from 38 nations converged in Havana. The activists, representing over 140 social, political, and cultural organizations, delivered donations of food, medicine, hygiene products, medical equipment, and energy-related items. Díaz-Canel described the U.S. Policy as an “economic and energy asphyxiation” targeting the Cuban people.

According to organizers, participants in the convoy covered their own travel and lodging expenses to maximize the amount of aid delivered. The mission represents millions worldwide who reject collective punishment and demand an end to coercive unilateral measures, according to David Adler, coordinator of the Progressive International.

Two additional vessels belonging to the flotilla are expected to arrive in the coming days, bringing further supplies to the island. The aid convoy’s arrival comes as Cuba continues to grapple with a severe economic crisis, exacerbated by the U.S. Embargo and internal challenges.
