Cristian Romero‘s stunning overhead kick in stoppage time salvaged a 2-2 draw for Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle United in a pulsating Premier League encounter on Sunday. Teh late goal denied Newcastle victory and extended Tottenham’s unbeaten run to four games under manager ange Postecoglou.
The match at St.James’ Park saw Bruno Guimarães put Newcastle ahead in the second half, capitalizing on a lay-off from Woltemade after good work from Anthony gordon. Romero, though, atoned for his earlier involvement in the Newcastle goal by heading in a corner to level the score. Earlier, Gordon had converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review of a challenge on Dan Burn, a decision Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou disputed, calling it “a mistake by VAR.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had introduced Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon in an attempt to break the deadlock, with the home side’s goalkeeper Vicario largely untested. Guimarães had earlier replaced the injured Sandro Tonali at half-time.
Romero’s dramatic equalizer came after a corner was punched clear, allowing the Tottenham captain to execute a spectacular overhead kick.”It was a beautiful goal,” Romero said, adding, “But every day with the national team, I watch Leo Messi.”
