Crimson Desert Update: AI Art Removed, Gameplay & Performance Improved

March 30, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Pearl Abyss has released a new update for Crimson Desert addressing technical issues, gameplay improvements and a recent controversy surrounding the use of AI-generated art assets within the game.

Following its launch, players began noticing inconsistencies in some in-game paintings, with reports surfacing on forums and social media regarding unusual anatomy, incoherent details, and a generally surreal aesthetic. Concerns quickly escalated when it became apparent that several of these images appeared to be created using artificial intelligence, with one example widely circulated depicting a distorted fusion of human and equine forms.

Pearl Abyss acknowledged the issue, stating that the AI-generated assets had been included unintentionally and apologizing for the deviation from the game’s intended artistic direction. The studio pledged to review and revise the game’s visual content to ensure consistency. According to a report from Engadget, Pearl Abyss took “full responsibility” for the inclusion of the AI-generated images.

The 1.01.00 patch represents the first major step in rectifying the situation. Official patch notes indicate that the development team “replaced some 2D visual assets to better align with the game’s art direction.” Players have confirmed the changes, noting that the problematic artwork has been replaced with paintings more consistent in style with the rest of the game. One player, posting on Twitter under the handle Synth Potato, shared a side-by-side comparison of a painting before and after the update, highlighting the removal of what they described as “yellow slop.”

Beyond the art replacements, the update also includes gameplay and performance enhancements. Fast travel loading times have been reduced, improving the fluidity of world exploration. Player controls, which had been criticized for feeling unresponsive, have also been adjusted.

Movement speed has been increased for both player characters and mounts, contributing to a more agile and responsive experience. The patch also introduces five new mount skins. Notebookcheck reported that Pearl Abyss has added a disclosure to the game’s Steam page regarding the use of AI-generated assets.

The update demonstrates a responsiveness to community feedback, addressing concerns related to technical performance, gameplay feel, and artistic integrity.
