The action-adventure game Crimson Desert is slated for release on March 19th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, according to developers Pearl Abyss. The game garnered significant attention at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, being named the best game showcased by the Digital Foundry team.
Digital Foundry’s technical analysis, partially derived from their CES 2026 coverage, highlights the game’s impressive graphical fidelity. The team noted the game is already achieving 4K resolution at nearly 60 frames per second. This performance was demonstrated using an AMD RX 9070 XT graphics card, suggesting potential for strong performance across a range of hardware configurations, including consoles and lower-end PCs.
A key element of Crimson Desert’s technical achievement is its use of the Blackspace Engine, a proprietary engine developed in-house by Pearl Abyss. This decision represents a departure from both Unity and Unreal Engine 5, the latter of which has faced challenges, according to Digital Foundry. The engine’s capabilities are particularly evident in the rendering of detail and natural lighting, combining traditional Screen Space Reflections (SSR) with ray tracing for global illumination.
The game’s water physics and rendering too received specific praise from Digital Foundry, who stated it is currently hard to find another project with a comparable level of realism in this area. The developers have also confirmed that Crimson Desert will feature exclusively human voice actors, a detail emphasized by Pearl Abyss in February.
At CES 2026, display technology advancements were also on show, including new monitor and TV buzzwords like RGB MiniLED and MicroRGB, which utilize RGB backlighting to deliver more vibrant color. HDMI 2.2, or “Ultra96” cables, debuted, doubling effective bandwidth to 96Gbps.
