Credit life insurance raises loan costs, BaFin and experts say

Credit life insurance raises loan costs, BaFin and experts say

October 27, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Borrowers who take out loan agreements face steep financial penalties when lenders bundle high-cost credit life insurance policies into their financing, according to a report published by echo24.de. These optional policies, designed to cover loan payments during illness, unemployment, or death, frequently double effective interest rates and generate heavy commissions for banks.

Consumer protection advocates have long scrutinized the financial products for excessive pricing and restricted payout terms. Peter Grieble, an insurance expert at the Consumer Center Baden-Württemberg, told echo24.de that customers should regularly avoid purchasing residual debt insurance. A consumer protection calculation cited by echo24.de demonstrates that an 18,000-euro loan can swell to a total repayment of over 31,000 euros once the insurance premium and associated interest are factored in.

Bank Commissions and Insurance Premiums Raise Loan Costs

The policies typically add 10 to 20 percent directly to the principal loan amount. Borrowers subsequently pay interest on the insurance premium itself, pushing total extra costs up to 25 percent of the initial financing volume. According to figures outlined by echo24.de, banks collect commissions amounting to 50 to 70 percent of the total premium, leaving only a fraction of the consumer’s payment dedicated to actual risk coverage.

Federal financial regulators share these concerns. The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, known as BaFin, warns that the insurance significantly drives up borrowing costs and notes that the contracts lack market standardization. A BaFin mystery shopping analysis conducted in December 2023 revealed that roughly six percent of test purchasers felt pressured into buying the coverage to secure their loans.

Regulations Prohibit Tying Loan Approval to Insurance

Bundling a loan agreement directly with an insurance policy violates regulatory standards. Grieble stated to echo24.de that tying a loan approval to mandatory insurance purchase is illegal. Current regulations mandate a cooling-off period, requiring that such policies be finalized no earlier than one week after the underlying loan agreement is signed.

For contracts finalized starting January 2, 2025, lawmakers eliminated the requirement for a secondary cancellation notice because simultaneous execution of the loan and insurance contract is strictly prohibited. Borrowers holding older contracts signed between 2018 and the end of 2024 were entitled to a second written notice regarding their cancellation rights exactly one week after signing. However, a review by insurance industry monitors indicated that providers often misused these mandatory welcome letters as promotional material rather than providing neutral disclosures.

Advocates Recommend Independent Coverage over Bundled Protection

Consumer advocates emphasize that loan agreements and insurance policies constitute legally distinct contracts, meaning the cancellation of one does not automatically dissolve the other.

Consumer protection agencies advise individuals seeking genuine financial security to evaluate specialized independent coverage, such as standalone disability or term life insurance policies, rather than bundled credit protection.
