CPBL Closers Tseng Chun-Yueh, Lin Kai-Wei File for Free Agency
Two of the Chinese Professional Baseball League’s premier closers, Fubon Guardians pitcher Tseng Chun-Yueh and Wei Chuan Dragons pitcher Lin Kai-Wei, have officially filed for free agency to pursue playing opportunities abroad. The move prompted remarks from US-based Taiwanese pitcher Teng Kai-Wei that the domestic league can no longer retain top-tier relief talent.
A Pact Forged at the World Baseball Classic
Tseng and Lin submitted their filings at the end of the 2026 regular season, seeking a jump to overseas leagues as reported by Yahoo Sports Taiwan.
Tseng revealed at a fan appreciation event that he and Lin made a pact during the March World Baseball Classic to test the overseas market together. That plan required carefully managing family considerations, including Tseng evaluating how a move would impact his young child's schooling and living environment.
Bullpen Crises for Fubon and Wei Chuan
The decision leaves both of their respective clubs facing significant bullpen restructuring for the upcoming season, according to an analysis by the United Daily News.
Lin anchored the Wei Chuan bullpen with 30 saves across 56 appearances, earning a 2.85 ERA. Fubon faces an even steeper void if Tseng departs, given his 25 saves and 1.57 ERA over 48 games. While Wei Chuan boasts viable internal candidates like Chen Kuan-Wei to step into the ninth-inning role, Fubon’s relief corps lacks comparable depth outside of Chang Yi.

Scouting Hurdles on the International Stage
Sports Vision analysts questioned the viability of Tseng's overseas prospects, noting that as a two-pitch reliever relying on a fastball and slider combination, he might face greater difficulty in Major League Baseball or Nippon Professional Baseball compared to younger, high-velocity prospects.
