Costa Rica Ranked as Central America’s most Peaceful Nation in 2025 Global Peace Index
San José,Costa Rica – Costa Rica is the sole Central American nation to achieve a ranking within the top 40 most peaceful countries globally,according to the 2025 Global Peace Index report released today. the country secured the 38th position, demonstrating a relative stability amidst a worldwide decline in peacefulness.
The report reveals a concerning global trend: world peace deteriorated by 0.36% in the last year, continuing an uninterrupted decline since 2014. Over the past decade, 100 countries have experienced a worsening of their peace levels. This comes as the number of active state conflicts reaches a post-World War II high of 59, resulting in 152,000 conflict-related deaths in 2024. Costa Rica’s ranking stands in stark contrast to the regional landscape,where escalating violence and political instability are prevalent.
the Global Peace Index assesses countries based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators encompassing ongoing conflict, safety and security, and militarization. While Costa rica maintains a strong position, the report highlights a broader global deterioration. Seventeen countries recorded over 1,000 deaths from internal conflicts in 2024 – the highest number since 1999 – and another 18 registered more than 100 deaths.Internationalization of conflicts is also increasing, with 78 nations involved in disputes outside their borders this year.
The report further emphasizes a pivotal moment in global relations, characterized by the fragmentation of power. The number of countries wielding global influence has nearly tripled as the end of the Cold War, rising from 13 to 34 in 2023.The economic cost of violence reached $19.97 trillion in 2024, representing 11.6% of the global GDP, with military expenditure alone totaling $2.7 trillion.
