Costa Rica Battles to Draw with Honduras, Herrera Urges Monday Victory
San Pedro Sula, Honduras – october 9, 2025 – Costa Rica secured a crucial point in a 1-1 draw against Honduras at the Morazán stadium, keeping their hopes alive for qualification to the 2026 world Cup.
Mexican coach Miguel Herrera expressed satisfaction with the result, stating, “We had it, but regrettably it didn’t go in, but the draw is not bad, it helps us strengthen the team emotionally. Today was a good job by the boys.”
Herrera praised his team’s performance throughout the week, highlighting the contributions of Murillo and Galo. “We worked well during the week, Murillo and Galo gave us good support and I think we played a good game, we didn’t suffer. In desperation they began to kick from afar.We where able to get a better result.”
With Haiti’s recent victory over Nicaragua impacting the group standings, Herrera emphasized the importance of securing points in upcoming matches. “I continue to maintain that depending on what we do now, we are obliged to get results for the points we give away and on Monday we must win to continue in the fight with Honduras and Haiti.”
Herrera also commended the performance of veteran players like Kendal Watson, alongside the overall defensive effort. “I loved how he played, but all of gamboa’s coverage and the three full-backs did well, Keylor and Watson showed it today. The young people must learn to take leadership. I would have liked to get the three points, but that’s football.”
Acknowledging Honduras’s strengths, Herrera noted, “They have players who handle the ball well, but I think we tied them to having the ball in their own court, later the team behaved well and we took advantage of spaces when they gave it to us.”
Herrera believes his team’s tactical approach was effective. “Tactically I think the team did a good job, we did everything we could to do it during the week, but if we had scored the goal I think I would say that we beat them tactically.” He added, “Not offensively as we were scoring goals and we have to wait for what’s next.”
