Cosplay History in Japan: New Episode & Interview 🎙️

March 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The term “cosplay,” a portmanteau of “costume” and “play,” originated in Japan in 1984 after film producer Nobuyuki Takahashi attended a costume contest at the 42nd World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles. He subsequently wrote about the phenomenon in the Japanese magazine My Anime, coining the term that would come to define a global subculture.

While costumed fans existed prior to the 1980s, particularly within science fiction fandom in the United States, Takahashi’s observation and naming of the practice marked a turning point. Early instances of fans dressing as characters appeared as far back as the 1930s and 1940s, but these were isolated events. The Japanese context, fueled by the rising popularity of manga, anime, and video games, provided fertile ground for cosplay to flourish.

The 1970s saw the emergence of fans creating and wearing costumes inspired by characters from works like “Ultraman” and “Mobile Suit Gundam.” These early efforts, often utilizing rudimentary materials, demonstrated a passionate commitment to embodying fictional personas. This period laid the groundwork for the formalization of the practice.

By the 1990s, cosplay had become a significant element of Japanese pop culture. Events in Tokyo and Osaka provided spaces for enthusiasts to showcase their creations and connect with others. The practice moved beyond simple imitation, evolving into a form of self-expression and identity exploration. Magazines dedicated to anime and manga played a crucial role in disseminating the trend, both within Japan and internationally.

The early 2000s witnessed the global expansion of cosplay, driven by the increasing accessibility of Japanese media. The phenomenon took root in Europe and the United States, mirroring the growth of manga and anime fandom in those regions. Today, cosplay is a widespread hobby, with dedicated events and online communities attracting participants from diverse backgrounds.

The Journal du Japon recently announced a series of articles dedicated to exploring the history of cosplay, beginning with a novel episode featuring an interview with a prominent figure in the community.
