Cosmopolitan‘s Bottled Verbena Cocktail Draws Criticism for Deviation From Original Recipe
LAS VEGAS – A beloved signature cocktail at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the Verbena, is undergoing changes that are sparking concern among loyal patrons. The resort is now utilizing a pre-packaged, bottled version of the drink, a departure from its previously handcrafted readiness, and the new formulation includes ingredients traditionally not found in a Verbena – or a margarita.
The shift comes as MGM Resorts, the Cosmopolitan’s parent company, increasingly employs “packers” – companies specializing in the mass production, bottling, and labeling of liquor for brands. while the bottles still prominently display the word “Handcrafted,” critics argue the term is misleading given the automated production process.
The new “Verbena Yuzu Margarita” now contains rum, an ingredient not typically associated with margaritas. MGM Resorts maintains the bottled version ensures consistency across all customer orders, eliminating the need for bartenders to master the recipe and reducing ingredient costs through adjusted formulations.
The original Verbena gained a devoted following for its unique flavor profile and the skill involved in its preparation. The change raises concerns about the broader impact of corporate cost-cutting measures on the Las Vegas experience, and the potential erosion of what makes certain establishments and offerings special.
The move is the latest in a growing trend of changes to iconic Las Vegas experiences, prompting some to question what remains “sacrosanct” in the evolving landscape of the city. Other long-standing Vegas staples mentioned as worth preserving include neon signs, the Bellagio fountains, and classic dining options like Tacos El Gordo.
