Cosby Sexual Assault Case: Woman Awarded $19M+ in Damages
A Los Angeles jury on Monday awarded $19.2 million to a woman who accused Bill Cosby of sexual battery, finding the comedian liable for a 1972 assault. The verdict, delivered after a civil trial, marks a significant outcome in one of the numerous allegations leveled against the once-celebrated entertainer.
The plaintiff, identified in court documents as Jane Doe 1, alleged that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles in 1972. She was a waitress at the time. The jury found Cosby liable for battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress, according to reports from NBC News and Deadline.
The $19.2 million award includes $12.5 million for compensatory damages and $6.7 million for punitive damages. The jury’s decision comes as Cosby continues to face legal repercussions from decades-vintage accusations of sexual misconduct. Rolling Stone reported the award as $19.3 million, a slight discrepancy in the reported total.
This case was brought under a recently enacted California law that temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for civil claims of sexual assault. The law allowed victims, who previously were barred from pursuing legal action due to the passage of time, to file lawsuits. This specific case was one of several revived under the new legislation.
Cosby, 86, did not testify during the trial. His legal team argued that the allegations were false and lacked sufficient evidence. The defense similarly challenged the credibility of the plaintiff’s testimony, but the jury ultimately sided with the accuser.
The verdict follows a series of criminal and civil cases against Cosby. In 2018, he was convicted of aggravated indecent assault in Pennsylvania, but that conviction was later overturned by the state Supreme Court. He has consistently maintained his innocence.
Attorneys for the plaintiff hailed the jury’s decision as a victory for survivors of sexual assault. The outcome is expected to encourage other victims to come forward and pursue legal recourse. Cosby’s representatives have not yet issued a formal statement regarding the verdict.
The case is likely to prompt further scrutiny of Cosby’s past conduct and the handling of sexual assault allegations within the entertainment industry. No immediate plans for appeal have been publicly announced by Cosby’s legal team.
