Road Accident in Oliveira de Azeméis Leaves One Injured
A traffic collision occurred on the afternoon of november 21, 2023, in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal, resulting in one individual sustaining injuries. The incident took place on National Road 233, near the parish of São Roque, at approximately 3:30 PM local time.
Emergency services, including the Oliveira de Azeméis Fire Department and the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), were dispatched to the scene following reports of the accident. Upon arrival, first responders found a collision involving two passenger vehicles – a Renault Clio and a Peugeot 208. The driver of the Peugeot, a 68-year-old male identified as António Silva, was trapped inside the vehicle and required extrication by firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools.
Silva was later transported to the Hospital de Santo António in Porto with moderate injuries. The driver of the Renault Clio, a 32-year-old woman named Maria Fernandes, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics. The GNR is currently investigating the cause of the accident, with preliminary reports suggesting that a loss of control on the part of one of the vehicles may have been a contributing factor. Traffic on National Road 233 was partially disrupted for approximately two hours while emergency crews worked at the scene and cleared the wreckage.

The Oliveira de Azeméis Fire Department has responded to 147 traffic incidents in 2023 to date, a 12% increase compared to the same period last year, according to municipal records. The GNR’s Oliveira de Azeméis detachment has reported a rise in accidents attributed to distracted driving and speeding.
Portugal’s road safety statistics indicate that the majority of serious accidents occur on national roads, rather than motorways. In 2022,the country recorded 313 fatalities on its roads,a slight increase from the previous year.
