Cornhole Champion & Amputee, Dayton Webber, Arrested in Deadly Shooting: Partner Speaks Out

March 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee, Dayton James Webber, 27, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of Bradrick Michael Wells, also 27, in La Plata, Maryland, on Sunday night, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Webber allegedly shot Wells during an argument while the two were in a car with other passengers. Following the shooting, Webber allegedly asked the other occupants of the vehicle to assist him in removing Wells’s body, but they refused and left the scene. Webber then fled with the victim still inside the car, police said.

Wells’s body was later discovered by a resident of Charlotte Hall, Maryland, approximately 14 miles from La Plata. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives subsequently located Webber’s vehicle over 100 miles away in Charlottesville, Virginia, and obtained an arrest warrant. He was taken into custody after being discharged from a Virginia hospital where he had sought medical attention for an unspecified issue.

Webber, a well-known figure in the professional cornhole circuit, had overcome significant physical challenges, having been a quadruple amputee since he was ten months aged. His story of perseverance and athletic achievement garnered media attention from outlets including ESPN and the Washington Post, with his parents telling ESPN the amputation saved his life from a severe bacterial infection.

Mike Hoffman, Webber’s former doubles partner in the American Cornhole League (ACL), expressed shock and sadness at the news of the arrest. “I’ve been mad, sad – it sucks,” Hoffman said in a telephone interview Tuesday. The pair had achieved success together, winning championships across several states including Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania, and eventually earning professional status.

Hoffman described Webber as fiercely independent, recalling instances where Webber modified his car to accommodate his physical limitations, utilizing prosthetic legs or adapted pedals. “Quickly, you stopped opening doors for him and stuff like that,” Hoffman said. “He could do whatever he felt like doing. Nothing could stop the kid.”

Hoffman also noted that Webber had been less active in the competitive cornhole scene recently, but they had maintained regular contact. He emphasized Webber’s strong family ties, stating, “Dayton has a great family, and I care about that family,” but added, “Yet, obviously, there is somebody [who] died, and you need to be respectful of that.”

Investigators have not yet released details regarding the motive for the argument that preceded the shooting. Webber is currently awaiting extradition to Maryland, where he faces charges of murder, assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has not provided a timeline for his return to Maryland or further details regarding the ongoing investigation.
