Bank of Ireland Invests €60M in Next-Gen ATMs
Modernization Aims for Enhanced Accessibility and Efficiency
Bank of Ireland is rolling out a substantial upgrade to its ATM network across Ireland, committing €60 million to install 650 new machines by the end of 2027. The initiative promises improved service, greater cash availability, and enhanced accessibility for all customers.
New Features and Rollout
The Ballincollig branch in Cork is among the first to benefit, already receiving four of the new ATMs. Branches in Westmeath, Kildare, Donegal, Dublin, Wicklow, Mayo, Roscommon, and Tipperary have also been upgraded. These next-generation ATMs boast increased cash-processing capabilities and are designed to reduce energy consumption by over 50 percent.
A key feature of the new fleet is their ability to both dispense and accept cash, with the majority functioning as ‘recyclers’ to maximize cash availability. This addresses a growing need, as a recent report by the Central Bank of Ireland showed that cash remains a preferred payment method for approximately 20% of transactions, particularly for smaller purchases. “As a full-service retail bank with a presence right across the island of Ireland, we are committed to continually improving our services and our customers’ financial wellbeing,”
—Aisling Killilea, Ballincollig Branch Manager
Killilea further explained that the investment reflects a dedication to providing modern and efficient banking services through purposeful investment in branches, technology, and infrastructure.
Accessibility Improvements
Bank of Ireland is prioritizing inclusivity with these upgrades. All new ATMs include high-contrast screens and offer voice assistance via an earphone socket, providing crucial support for visually impaired customers. This commitment to accessibility aligns with the bank’s broader efforts to serve a diverse customer base.
Long-Term Investment and Coverage
The €60 million investment encompasses not only the installation of the 650 ATMs but also up to five years of servicing and maintenance. With 182 branches nationwide – 169 in the Republic of Ireland and 13 in Northern Ireland – Bank of Ireland intends to replace ATMs in every location as part of this comprehensive program.
This substantial investment signals Bank of Ireland’s continued commitment to physical banking infrastructure alongside its digital offerings, ensuring customers have convenient and reliable access to cash and banking services for years to come.
