Nevada‘s Climate Challenges: A Humanities Perspective
Relocating to Reno after high school offered a refreshing change of scenery, immersing me in the natural beauty of sage, pine, and the Truckee River.My studies in wildlife ecology and conservation at the University of Nevada, Reno, have deepened this connection to nature.
However, this immersion is increasingly shadowed by anxiety over climate change, which affects Nevada through unpredictable winters and severe wildfire seasons. These environmental shifts pose significant threats, particularly to the state’s most vulnerable communities.
My exploration of these challenges led me to minor in social justice and intern with Nevada Humanities, inspiring this blog series. The series features interviews with Nevadans from diverse fields, including political science, photography, and communications, all passionate about climate issues and the humanities.
Through these open conversations, we aim to foster connection and mutual understanding, encouraging a broader perspective on our environment. By sharing knowledge and collaborating,we can empower Nevadans to build more resilient communities in the face of climate change.

nevada’s unique geography, characterized by arid landscapes and mountainous regions, makes it particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Ancient data indicates a trend of increasing average temperatures and altered precipitation patterns across the state. These shifts have direct consequences for water resources, agriculture, and the prevalence of wildfires, which are critical concerns for the state’s economy and it’s residents’ well-being.
The humanities play a crucial role in understanding and addressing climate change by providing frameworks for examining human behavior, societal values, and cultural responses to environmental challenges. By integrating perspectives from fields like history, literature, and ideology, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of how climate change affects communities and develop more effective, human-centered solutions.
