Work has begun on a Hwy. 17 construction project north of the Sault that is expected to wrap up next year.

In total, about 14.7 km will be rehabilitated, from Sault Ste. Marie city limits to the Goulais River bridge, says Tanya Blazina, senior media relations for the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

“Work began last month and includes repaving, construction of fully paved shoulders and a new southbound left-turn lane at the commercial entrance on Hwy. 17 near Goulais River,” said Blazina in an email on Friday.

“There are also improvements planned to drainage, guide rails and the Root River culverts,” she added.

In a story about the work published in the fall, Blazina said the project was planned to be done over two construction seasons.

Some parts of the construction will have an impact on traffic.

“Several of the centerline culvert replacements and pavement rehabilitation will require single lane closures,” said Blazina in the fall interview.

She added: “The Root River North and South structural culverts will require single lane closures controlled by temporary traffic signals. Portable Variable Messaging Signs will be used to advise traffic to be prepared to stop when the signals are in operation.”

Blazina said travellers can visit Ontario.ca/511 for updates on work and traffic impacts.
