The Municipal Music Band of Almería showed again yesterday afternoon with which it was the first of the three concerts of the summer cycle, which will have continuity the next two Thursday of July, on the 17th and 24th, within the summer schedule launched through the area of culture, traditions and major parties of the City of Almería in the framework of ‘Almería Summer Vibes‘. They are always in the Plaza de la Constitución, at 8:00 p.m. and with free admission.

Yesterday’s concert took place under the title ‘A look at the Overture for Band: Spain and the United States‘. A program with which the municipal band, under the always outstanding direction of José Solá Palmer, performed eight compositions written in the form of overture, four Spanish authors and four US authors.

As explained by the director of the band, the objective was “on the one hand, to give the native vision of the form and its plasma in the Spanish band and on the other the vision and expressing in the American band, which allowed to appreciate similarities and differences in terms of style and the instrumentation for band, as well as the influences between one side and another of the Atlantic”.

To emphasize that, in the Spanish part, there was a presence in the program of two Andalusian composers and in full production, such as the Almeria José Domingo Castillo, with the work ‘Royal Aberture’ where he highlights his structure in a rapsodic form, and the Granadino Ángel López Carreño, with ‘festive overture’, with slow introduction, expressive central section and brilliant end. The Spanish part was completed with the initials’ overture for a queen ‘, ceremonial and ampulous music by Bernardo Adam Ferrero, and with’ to the Lluna de Valencia, by Miguel Asens Arbó, with dance air and written in an energetic typical relative of the Valencian folklore.

On the American side, the works ‘American Overture’ by Joseph Wiilcox Jenkins, dedicated in his day to the director of the United States Navy, Chester E. Whiting, the two contemporaries active James L. Hosay and ‘Persis, Overture’, of a fantastic type and set in Persepolis, and James Barnes with ‘Foxfire’ Martial rhythm, closing with the ‘jubilant overture’ by Frank William Erickson, festive overture and very living time.

Upcoming appointments

The next concert, on Thursday, July 17, is titled ‘A musical look at the Spanish Mediterranean Sea’ and it will have works by FJ Pérez Cruz, L. Magenti, B. Adam Ferrero, M. Massotti, R. Talens, P. Artola, Jr Pascual and A. Blanquer. With this program the band will travel musically the Spanish Mediterranean coast with evocations to geography, parties and the character of the regions bathed by the same waters.

The summer cycle of the Municipal Music Band in this month of July will conclude on Thursday 24 with ‘A look at the original music for Spanish band of the 21st century’, with works by M. Morales, A. Cámara, C. López Gándara, S. Gómez and J. Susi. With strong Andalusian presence, the program combines local tradition and diverse languages.
