New Jersey Comptroller Alleges Insurance Firm Linked to Political Leader Violated Contracting Laws
TRENTON – The New jersey Office of the State Comptroller released a report Tuesday accusing conner, Strong & Buckelew, an insurance brokerage firm based in Camden, and its related company PERMA, of improperly securing millions of dollars in insurance contracts for state and local employees. The report alleges the firms “gained control” of the contracts without sufficient clarity, competitive bidding, or oversight.
the investigation, conducted by the independent state watchdog agency, focuses on the management of health benefits for approximately 100,000 local and school employees. According to the report, the firm is overseen by one of New Jersey’s most influential political leaders.
The Comptroller’s Office found that the process lacked “adequate disclosure, competition, or accountability.” The full report is available at https://www.nj.gov/comptroller/reports/2025/20250909.shtml#section3.
