Connections Hints & Answers: Saturday, March 21st – NYT Puzzle Guide
Players of the Fresh York Times’ daily word game, Connections, faced a challenging puzzle on Saturday, March 21, 2026, requiring them to categorize sixteen words into four groups of four, each linked by a common theme. The game, a recent addition to the Times’ Games section created with the help of associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu, has quickly gained popularity alongside other word puzzles like Wordle.
The puzzle’s difficulty stemmed from deceptive connections and the demand to identify increasingly obscure themes, categorized by color-coded difficulty levels: yellow (easiest), green, blue, and purple (hardest). Players are limited to four incorrect guesses before the game ends and the solutions are revealed.
Today’s puzzle featured the words: STRAIGHT, BISHOP, BLUNT, CAPTURE, CROWN, FRANK, FROST, GOAL, JUMP, KING, MARK, OBJECT, PLAIN, POINT, POUND, and RICH. Hints provided throughout the day suggested that the yellow category involved directness, the green category related to aims or targets, the blue category concerned diagonal movements and doubles, and the purple category featured names of authors.
The solution revealed four distinct groupings. The “Direct” category (yellow) comprised the words BLUNT, FRANK, PLAIN, and STRAIGHT. The “Target” category (green) included GOAL, MARK, OBJECT, and POINT. “Checkers Terms” (blue) consisted of CAPTURE, CROWN, JUMP, and KING. Finally, the most challenging category, “20th Century American Poets” (purple), brought together BISHOP, FROST, POUND, and RICH.
The puzzle proved particularly difficult for some, with the overlapping meanings of words like “straight” and “point” causing confusion. Though, players with a strong background in American literature found the purple category more accessible, identifying the poets Adrienne Rich, Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, and Elizabeth Bishop.
The New York Times offers a Connections Bot for players to analyze their performance and track their progress, similar to the Wordle bot. Players can share their results on social media, continuing the game’s growing online community. A new Connections puzzle will be available on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
