Connecticut Economy Ranks 7th Nationally for GDP Growth

September 30, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor News

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released its second quarter Gross Domestic Product report, revealing that Connecticut’s economy grew at a strong pace, ranking seventh nationally among fastest-growing states and best in New England.

Second Quarter Growth Lifts State to Seventh Nationally

Connecticut reversed years of underperforming national growth trends, according to the federal economic data. The strong showing places the state seventh in the country for economic growth and at the top of the New England region. Chris DiPentima, president and CEO of the CBIA, noted that local enterprises continue to invest, hire, and expand despite broader economic uncertainties.

“Connecticut’s economy delivered another strong quarter of growth, ranking seventh nationally among fastest-growing states, and best in New England,” DiPentima stated in response to the data release. “After years of underperforming, Connecticut has made significant progress over the past year to reverse national growth trends.”

Manufacturing Sector Drives Regional Economic Expansion

The primary engine behind Connecticut’s quarterly performance is its manufacturing sector, which expanded by 10.6% during the period, far outpacing the rest of the country. State factories and production facilities found innovative ways to increase output and meet consumer demand despite ongoing workforce challenges.

“Manufacturing continues to be one of Connecticut’s greatest economic strengths, with companies finding ways to innovate, increase productivity, and grow to meet demand even with ongoing workforce challenges,” DiPentima said.

Labor Shortages and High Costs Threaten Future Momentum

Despite the positive GDP figures, structural headwinds remain. State employers currently have more than 86,000 open jobs across various industries.

“Connecticut’s growth is encouraging, and with more than 86,000 open jobs, the state must address persistent labor shortages and slowing population growth so we can sustain this growth and not give companies reasons to look outside the state to meet growing demand,” DiPentima emphasized.

Sustaining this trajectory requires addressing the state’s cost structure to make it more affordable for workers to build their lives and for enterprises to keep good jobs locally.
