BUENOS AIRES – Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay have officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World cup following recent Conmebol qualifying matches. Uruguay also secured their place with a 3-0 win against Peru, thanks to goals from Rodrigo Aguirre (14′), Giorgian de Arrascaeta (58′), and Federico Viñas (80′). This will be Uruguay’s 15th World Cup appearance. Paraguay qualified after a 0-0 draw with Ecuador, earning them 25 points and a return to the tournament after a 16-year absence.
“It’s an emotional night, for memory for what Leo means. Until the last day he is with us, Leo will continue to teach us; I thank him for everything he gave to the National Team and football,” said Lautaro Martínez after the Argentina-Venezuela match. Messi added, “There are many emotions, I lived many things on this court. It is always a joy to play in Argentina with our people… many years ago we have been enjoying a game after a game. I am very happy; being able to end this way is what I always dreamed.”
Brazil also won 3-0 against Chile, maintaining their second-place position in the standings. Currently, Argentina’s Lionel Messi leads the qualifying goalscorers with 8 goals, surpassing Luis Díaz (7 goals) and Miguel Borja (6 goals).
The final Conmebol repechage spot remains contested between Colombia and Bolivia. Colombia will visit Venezuela, while Bolivia will host Brazil on the next matchday. Venezuela (18 points) holds a slight advantage over Bolivia (17 points). If bolivia defeats Brazil in La Paz, they will need Venezuela to draw or lose against Colombia to secure the repechage berth.
