DR Congo Army Reclaims Uvira City from M23 Rebels
The Congolese army announced Monday it has regained control of the strategically critically important eastern city of Uvira following the withdrawal of M23 fighters. This marks the end of weeks of rebel occupation in the lakeside city, located near the border with Burundi.
The M23 rebel group seized Uvira during a recent offensive in south Kivu province. Their pullout follows days of fluctuating troop movements, signaling a shift in control. The army’s regaining of Uvira is a significant development in the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic republic of Congo.
The M23,widely believed to be backed by Rwanda according to UN experts, has been a major destabilizing force in the region. the group has repeatedly clashed with Congolese forces and other armed groups, contributing to a humanitarian crisis and displacing thousands of civilians.
While the withdrawal from Uvira is a positive step, the broader conflict continues. The DRC government has repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting the M23,a claim Rwanda denies. Al Jazeera reports that regional tensions remain high.
The situation in eastern DRC is complex, with numerous armed groups vying for control of territory and resources. The Congolese army, frequently enough supported by regional forces, is working to restore stability and protect civilians. The United Nations peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, also plays a role in the region, though its mandate has been scaled back in recent years. Learn more about MONUSCO here.
The recapture of Uvira is a tactical victory for the Congolese army, but lasting peace will require a comprehensive political solution addressing the root causes of the conflict and regional dynamics.
