Community Rallies for Alaska Family After 15-Year-Old Bicyclist Dies in Crash

August 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Mason Ryan Stiglich, a 15-year-old Anchorage resident, died on August 18, 2026, following a bicycle collision with a Toyota RAV4 near an Anchorage highway. As the Anchorage Police Department investigates the crash, community fundraising efforts organized via GoFundMe have generated nearly $90,000 to support the Stiglich family and advance bicycle safety advocacy.

The Collision and Immediate Aftermath in Anchorage

The tragic sequence of events unfolded last Wednesday evening when Anchorage police officers responded to emergency calls regarding a bicyclist struck by a motor vehicle, according to local reporting from KTUU and WNDU. Investigators determined that a Toyota RAV4 hit two bicyclists while exiting a parking lot situated near a local highway. First responders rushed 15-year-old Mason Stiglich to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Despite the extraordinary efforts of emergency medical services and hospital staff, along with Mason’s own fighting spirit, he succumbed to his injuries three days after the incident. Police have not yet announced whether the driver of the vehicle will face criminal charges, and the collision remains an active matter of investigation for municipal authorities.

Remembering Mason Stiglich and His Passion for Advocacy

Friends and family remember the teenager as a uniquely adventurous and caring individual with aspirations of becoming a pilot. Casey Johnson, a family friend and former colleague of Mason’s father at the Anchorage Fire Department, recalled a recent outing where the father and son watched F-22 fighter jets at an air show.

Beyond aviation, Mason maintained a deep commitment to mountain biking and actively promoted bike helmet safety among his peers. According to Johnson, the 15-year-old was wearing all of his safety gear at the exact time of the collision, striving to set a positive example for other riders in the community.

Community Support and Legacy Fund Initiatives

The Anchorage community and donors nationwide have rallied around the Stiglich family during their unimaginable loss. A GoFundMe campaign established to alleviate financial pressures on the family surpassed $90,000 by Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson noted that any surplus funds generated through the memorial effort will be directed toward supporting mountain biking programs and helmet safety advocacy—continuing the exact educational causes that Mason championed during his life.
