Amdavad, India, to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games
Amdavad (formerly Ahmedabad), India, has been officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the centenary edition of the multi-sport event. The announcement was made Wednesday in Glasgow, following ratification by the Commonwealth Sport governing body, choosing amdavad over Abuja,Nigeria.
This will be the second time India has hosted the Commonwealth games, following the 2010 edition in Delhi. Organizers have stated their ambition to “lay the foundation for the next 100 years” with these Games.
The 2030 Games are planned to feature between 15 and 17 sports, a number that falls between the 10 sports planned for the reimagined 2024 event in Glasgow and the 19 sports contested at the 2022 games in Birmingham, England. Core sports confirmed include athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls, and weightlifting, alongside their Para-sport counterparts. Artistic gymnastics, netball, and boxing have also been included on the program.
A final decision on the remaining sports will be made starting in December, with archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon, and wrestling all under consideration. Amdavad will also have the opportunity to propose up to two additional sports, perhaps showcasing traditional or regionally popular events.
The Games are currently scheduled to be held in October 2030, a timing chosen to mitigate weather-related challenges.
