Commanders 2026 NFL Draft: Injury Concerns for Top Prospect

March 22, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Washington Commanders’ draft strategy faces a significant complication as concerns mount over the medical status of projected top-five pick, Jonah Blackwell, a wide receiver from Southern California. Reports circulating among NFL scouts suggest a previously undisclosed history of soft tissue injuries could jeopardize Blackwell’s long-term durability, potentially forcing the Commanders to reassess their plans for the seventh overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Commanders, coming off a 5-12 season in 2025, are in a prime position to address several needs, with wide receiver being prominently among them. Having secured the No. 7 pick, the team initially appeared poised to target one of the draft’s most dynamic playmakers. However, the emerging information regarding Blackwell’s health has introduced a layer of risk that team officials are reportedly taking seriously.

According to multiple sources familiar with the team’s internal discussions, the Commanders’ medical staff is conducting a thorough review of Blackwell’s medical records. The team is acutely aware of the potential for a costly mistake, particularly given their recent trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, which cost them their second- and fourth-round picks this year. That trade, and Tunsil’s subsequent multi-year extension, underscores the Commanders’ willingness to invest in established talent, but likewise highlights the limited draft capital available to mitigate risk.

The Commanders’ draft position, solidified following the conclusion of the 2025 season, is the fourth time in franchise history they’ve held the seventh overall pick. The last instance came in 1999, when they selected cornerback Champ Bailey. The pressure to craft a significant impact with this pick is amplified by the team’s recent struggles and the expectations of a demanding fan base.

The 2026 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 23 in Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium, with the first round taking place that evening. Rounds two and three will follow on April 24, and rounds four through seven will conclude the event on April 25. The Commanders currently hold picks in the first, third, fifth, sixth (two picks), and seventh rounds. They acquired an additional sixth-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers in a trade involving running back Brian Robinson Jr.

Even as the Commanders have not publicly commented on the specifics of Blackwell’s medical situation, the team has acknowledged the importance of conducting comprehensive evaluations of all potential draft prospects. Team officials have indicated they will prioritize players who not only possess elite talent but also demonstrate a commitment to long-term health and durability. The team did not receive any compensatory picks in this year’s draft.

The draft order, as currently established, places the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 1, followed by the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, and Cleveland Browns. The Commanders’ position at No. 7 means they will be forced to react to the selections of the teams ahead of them, potentially leading to a shift in strategy if the top-rated wide receivers are off the board.
