Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day 2024: Davina McCall & Stars Raise £30 Million+
Elon Musk sparked a renewed debate about the definition of womanhood Saturday with a post on his social media platform X stating, “If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not.” The post, reported by The Independent, quickly amassed over 30 million views and 20,000 responses, eliciting both agreement and criticism.
While some users echoed Musk’s sentiment, characterizing it as stating the “obvious,” others challenged the assertion. Several responses pointed to medical conditions such as Mayer–Rokitansky–Küster–Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which results in the absence or underdevelopment of the uterus from birth and to individuals who have undergone hysterectomies. One user stated, “That’s your opinion. Trans women are women too.”
Musk’s comments follow a recent exchange with California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding transgender individuals, as reported by The Independent. Newsom had stated during a podcast interview with The Fresh York Times that he “want[s] to notice trans kids” and highlighted his administration’s pro-trans legislation.
The debate surrounding Musk’s post occurs amid broader scrutiny of content moderation on X, formerly known as Twitter. The Independent reported in January 2026 that the platform has “descended into a cesspit of every kind of racism, misogyny, social and sexual hate, misinformation, disinformation, political manipulation, election interference, pornography, conspiracy theories and much else” since Musk’s acquisition. Concerns have specifically been raised regarding the use of the platform’s AI-powered assistant, Grok, to generate sexualized deepfake images, particularly of women and children.
The UK government is currently considering a ban on Grok, a move that has prompted discussion about free speech and the responsibilities of AI developers. X has stated it takes action against illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, by removing it and suspending accounts, and that users prompting Grok to create illegal content will face consequences.
Musk’s views on reproductive rights have also drawn criticism. According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, Musk has routinely used “extreme rhetoric about abortion, equating this essential health care to ‘murder’ and ‘genocide’” and has spread “misinformation about hormonal birth control.” The organization further states that Musk played a key role in dismantling USAID, impacting international programs promoting reproductive and maternal health.
As of February 17, 2026, the European Union has launched an investigation into Grok, according to The Independent, adding to the growing international pressure on Musk and X regarding content moderation and AI safety.
