Jessica Kirson Apologizes for Performing at Riyadh Comedy Festival, Donates Fee to Human rights institution
Los Angeles, CA - November 2, 2023 – Comedian Jessica Kirson has issued a lengthy statement expressing “sincere regret” for her participation in the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia on September 29th. The announcement comes amidst controversy surrounding the festival, with some comedians facing criticism for performing in a country with a documented history of human rights violations.
Kirson’s statement, released today, details her reasoning for accepting the invitation, explaining she sought and received a guarantee she could perform openly as a lesbian and include gay material in her set.”As an openly gay person, when I was asked to perform in Riyadh, I was surprised,” Kirson wrote. “I requested a guarantee that I could be openly out as a lesbian on stage and perform gay material. I hoped that this could help LGBTQ+ people in Saudi Arabia feel seen and valued.” She stated she believes she is the first openly gay comic to address these topics on stage in Saudi Arabia and received messages from attendees expressing gratitude for the representation.
Despite this, Kirson acknowledged the problematic nature of performing under the auspices of the Saudi government. “At the same time, I deeply regret participating under the auspices of the Saudi government,” she stated.
To demonstrate her commitment to human rights, Kirson announced she has donated her entire performance fee to a human rights organization. “I have donated the entirety of what I was paid to perform there to a human rights organization. I made this decision because I want that money to go to an organization that can help combat these severe issues,” she explained.
The comedian also acknowledged the differing viewpoints of her fellow performers, noting Bill Burr recently defended his decision to participate, calling it a “great experience.” Kirson emphasized the importance of open dialog and respecting diverse perspectives.
Kirson concluded her statement with a direct apology to her fans, particularly within the queer community, acknowledging the disappointment her decision caused. “Most importantly, I am deeply sorry to all the fans and followers I have hurt or disappointed,” she wrote. “I will take full responsibility for my actions and dedicate myself to making amends, so that my words and choices reflect the respect and care you deserve.”
