Colts Edge Rusher Search: Trade for Kayvon Thibodeaux?

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Colts’ Pass Rush Pursuit Shifts to Trade Market After Hendrickson Loss

The Indianapolis Colts are pivoting to explore trade options to bolster their pass rush after failing to secure free agent defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who signed a four-year, $112 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens, according to reports from ESPN and Pro Football Network.

Indianapolis had made a competitive offer to Hendrickson, reportedly around $25 million per year, but was ultimately unable to match the Ravens’ offer of $28 million annually. The Colts’ interest in Hendrickson stemmed from his familiarity with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, with whom he worked in Cincinnati from 2021-2024, and a clear need for improved pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Hendrickson led the NFL in sacks in 2024, despite playing only seven games last season due to injury.

The loss of Hendrickson comes after the Ravens’ pursuit of Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby fell apart due to a failed physical, prompting Baltimore to quickly redirect their focus to Hendrickson. The Colts now face a challenging landscape in free agency, with dwindling options to address their pass-rush deficiencies. They have already lost edge rushers Kwity Paye, who signed with the Raiders, and Samson Ebukam to free agency.

With limited cap space – approximately $27 million remaining – and a desire to continue building a younger defense, Colts General Manager Chris Ballard may prioritize acquiring a pass rusher via trade. Ballard has previously indicated a preference for adding “faster and younger” players along the defensive front seven, potentially narrowing the field of trade targets.

The Colts’ draft position at 47th overall is unlikely to yield a significant immediate impact player, as analysts predict eight edge rushers will be selected before their pick. This further strengthens the case for exploring the trade market. However, acquiring a difference-making edge rusher via trade presents several hurdles, including finding willing partners, the scarcity of young, available edge rushers, and the high cost of acquiring established players.

Potential trade candidates include New York Giants defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux, the fifth overall pick in the 2022 draft, has underperformed relative to expectations, recording 12 sacks in his fully healthy season, and has missed 15 games in his four seasons. The Giants’ new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, may be willing to move Thibodeaux if it allows him to reshape the defensive front. A report from GMenHQ suggests Giants fans would be amenable to trading Thibodeaux for a late third or early fourth-round pick.

The Giants also present a potential trade partner due to their cap situation and a crowded defensive line, featuring four defensive linemen among their nine highest-paid players. Indianapolis could potentially offer veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II, along with a fourth-round draft pick, in exchange for Thibodeaux. The Colts recently signed cornerbacks Britt and Wally, potentially creating flexibility to part with Moore. Extending Thibodeaux’s contract could also help manage the Colts’ cap space in the short term.

Other teams potentially willing to trade an edge rusher include the Raiders, Jets, Cardinals, Titans, Giants, and Cleveland Browns, all of whom are rebuilding or facing cap constraints. The Saints are also a possibility, but their existing cap issues related to Chase Young and Cameron Jordan may limit their flexibility.

As of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the Colts have not publicly announced any ongoing trade discussions. The team’s next move remains uncertain, but the need for an improved pass rush remains a critical priority.
