Colorado Dentist Accused of Poisoning Wife for Affair, Crown Alleges in Opening Statements
A Colorado dentist, James Craig, stands accused of fatally poisoning his wife, Angela Craig, in March 2023, allegedly motivated by an extramarital affair. The prosecution laid out its case Tuesday, painting a picture of a “calculated murder” orchestrated by the 45-year-old dentist.
Angela Craig was hospitalized on March 17, 2023, wiht symptoms of headache and dizziness. Her condition rapidly declined, leading to brain death and subsequent disconnection from life support on March 19. Authorities quickly identified potassium cyanide as the likely poison, with initial reports indicating Craig had obtained the substance two days prior to his wife’s death.
The trial, delayed for over two years due to ongoing legal proceedings and changes in Craig’s defense team, finally commenced this week. The crown prosecutor, Ryan Brackley, asserted that craig entered the hospital room with the intent to kill his wife, not to save her.
“He did not enter this room to save Angela’s life,” Brackley stated. “He did not enter this room to fight for her life or to support her. He entered this room to kill her, deliberately, to intentionally put an end to his life with a fatal dose of cyanide.”
The prosecution’s argument hinges on three key elements: Angela Craig’s repeated hospital visits preceding her death, James Craig’s affair with a woman named Karin Cain from Texas, and the accused’s purchase of poison. Evidence presented suggests Craig created a dentist office email account on February 27, 2023, and used it to research lethal doses of arsenic on Google before ordering the substance via Amazon.
Just two days after this online activity, Angela Craig was admitted to the hospital complaining of dizziness. Text messages revealed by the Crown suggest Angela had only consumed a protein drink that morning before falling ill. She was admitted for a second hospital stay on March 13, the same day a potassium cyanide order was delivered to Craig’s dental practice.
Further complicating the case, the prosecution highlighted a series of “sexually explicit” messages exchanged between Craig and Cain while Angela was hospitalized. In contrast, the defense has proposed suicide as a possible cause of death for Angela Craig, claiming she had asked her husband to procure potassium cyanide.
