College Basketball Player of the Year Ladder: Toppin Climbs After Big Win

by Emma Walker – News Editor

LUBBOCK, TX – Texas Tech forward JT Toppin has significantly improved his standing in national Player of the Year projections following a dominant performance against a top-ranked opponent, while injuries and inconsistent play have reshuffled the landscape of college basketball’s individual awards race.

Toppin’s 31-point, 13-rebound effort in an overtime victory against Arizona has propelled him into contention for the Wooden and Karl Malone Awards, according to recent reports. The junior forward currently leads the nation with 199 made field goals and ranks sixth nationally in rebounding with 10.6 per game, while averaging 21.8 points per game. He was a finalist for the Malone Award last season as a sophomore.

The rise of Toppin coincides with a setback for North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson, who suffered an injury that has removed him from the Player of the Year conversation. Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson has as well fallen from contention, after a recent performance where he scored 10 points with zero rebounds and zero assists following a prior absence from the Jayhawks’ lineup. Peterson’s struggles have opened opportunities for other players to emerge.

Illinois freshman Keaton Wagler has also garnered attention, earning a spot on several Player of the Year ladders. Despite a slight dip in scoring after a 46-point game against Purdue earlier in the season, Wagler’s overall performance has been recognized as exceptional, marking a rapid ascent from a three-star recruit to a key player for the Fighting Illini.

Other players receiving recognition include Duke’s Cameron Boozer, consistently lauded for his playmaking and rebounding abilities, and Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg, praised for his defensive prowess. Purdue guard Braden Smith and Michigan State guard Jeremy Fears Jr. Have also been highlighted for their leadership and scoring contributions to their respective teams. Arkansas guard Tramon Acuff is being recognized as the best scoring point guard in the country.

Texas Tech sophomore Christian Anderson has also been recognized, earning a spot on the Bob Cousy Award Midseason Top 10 list. Fans can participate in voting for both the Malone and Cousy Awards on hoophallawards.com, with the fan vote counting as one committee vote in the finalist selection process. The Mid-Season Top 10 lists will be narrowed to five finalists in mid-March, with winners announced in late March.

The competition for individual honors remains fierce as the college basketball season progresses, with conference play intensifying and injuries continuing to impact key players.
