Hull, UK – Coldplay’s upcoming concerts at the MKM Stadium in Hull on June 6th and 7th are set to be partially powered by fan energy, continuing the band’s enterprising sustainability efforts on their Music of the Spheres World Tour.

The British rock band, fronted by Chris Martin, initially announced their commitment to reduce the tour’s carbon footprint by 50% in 2021. To achieve this, Coldplay has implemented a range of innovative solutions, including kinetic dance floors that convert fan movement into electricity, a reduction in air travel for band and crew, and a notable tree-planting initiative. A key component of this strategy, prominently featured at recent concerts, involves stationary bicycles allowing attendees to pedal and generate power for the stage, lighting, and backstage operations.

The initiative isn’t new; Coldplay has been experimenting with kinetic energy generation since 2022. The bicycles, provided by Dutch company Energy by Cycles, allow fans to directly contribute to the show’s power supply. Each bicycle generates approximately 150 watts of power when in use, and multiple bikes are deployed at each venue.

hull City council leader, Councillor Mike Ross, expressed enthusiasm for hosting the concerts, stating, “We’re all excited to play host to not only the band, but fans from across the country who will be visiting our fine city. Coldplay’s ongoing campaign for sustainability is something we support wholeheartedly.”

The Music of the Spheres tour, which began in March 2022, has visited numerous cities globally, including Amsterdam, where the bicycle power generation was first widely publicized. Coldplay is working with environmental organizations such as Reverb to track and minimize the tour’s environmental impact. The band aims to make the tour carbon neutral through a combination of reductions and carbon offsetting projects.
