Coke, hot dogs, and processed foods might be cutting 36 minutes off your life, study reveals – India News

Everyday Foods Linked to Shorter Lifespans

New research suggests that some common foods might be shaving minutes off your life. That hot dog or sugary soda could have a surprising impact on your overall health and longevity.

Minutes Matter: Unveiling the Impact of Common Foods

A study from the University of Michigan suggests that consuming just one hot dog could reduce your lifespan by 36 minutes. A can of Coke, according to the research, might cost you 12 minutes. The analysis also indicated a possible 13-minute reduction from breakfast sandwiches and eggs, nine minutes from cheeseburgers, and six minutes from bacon.

The Culprit: Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs)

Researchers pinpointed ultra-processed foods (UPFs) as primary concerns. These manufactured items are loaded with sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, preservatives, and additives. While convenient, UPFs are increasingly associated with various health issues. In fact, ultra-processed foods now make up 58% of the average American diet, according to a recent study from Tufts University (Tufts University, 2024).

Concerning Links to Health Risks

Earlier in the year, a study in the British Medical Journal connected UPFs to significant health risks, including a 50 percent higher risk of dying from heart-related diseases and a 48–53 percent greater risk of mental health issues like anxiety and depression. The study also found a 12 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and up to a 66 percent greater chance of getting heart disease.

The “Western Diet” Under Scrutiny

Experts emphasize these findings reinforce long-held warnings against the “Western diet,” characterized by its heavy reliance on processed, packaged, and fast foods. This dietary pattern is spreading globally, raising concerns for health officials.

Not All Foods Are Created Equal

However, the University of Michigan study offered some positive news. Nutrient-rich fish, for example, may increase life expectancy by 32 minutes per serving. Fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts also contribute to longer lifespans.

Surprising Benefits from Fermented Cheeses

Interestingly, certain cheeses, such as cheddar and brie, which are often criticized for their fat content, may offer health benefits. These fermented cheeses contain unique bacteria and nutrients potentially protective against diseases like liver cancer.

The Impact of Sugary Drinks

The study also highlighted concerns about sugary drinks, especially Coke. A single can contains approximately 39 grams of sugar, exceeding the daily limit recommended by the American Heart Association. High sugar intake can lead to obesity, insulin resistance, and heart problems. The 12-minute life reduction attributed to a Coke is rooted in data about sugar’s effects on the body.

A Public Health Crisis in the Making?

Perhaps the most concerning aspect is the normalization of these foods. Fast food, sugary drinks, and packaged meals are frequently perceived as affordable and convenient, especially for those in fast-paced cities or low-income areas. However, the true cost involves lost life minutes and rising healthcare expenses, a cost often underestimated.

Health experts caution that the overconsumption of UPFs represents a public health crisis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, account for 74 percent of global deaths, with diets playing a significant contributing role.
