Warm Weekend Ahead for Central New York, Followed by Stormy Conditions
Syracuse, N.Y. – Central New York is set for a significant warm-up this weekend, with temperatures climbing well above seasonal averages. Though, the pleasant conditions will be followed by strong winds and a risk of severe thunderstorms and flooding.
Today, a warm front will move through the region, bringing mostly cloudy skies and a slight chance of isolated showers between 2 and 4 PM. Temperatures will start in the mid-40s this morning, rising to the upper 60s by afternoon. Overnight lows will remain mild,dipping only into the mid-50s.
sunday will be considerably warmer, with highs expected to reach the upper 70s - approximately 20 degrees above normal. However, a strong low-pressure system approaching from the southwest will also bring increasing winds.
Sustained south winds of 20-30 mph are forecast, with gusts potentially reaching 40 mph, beginning late Sunday morning and continuing throughout the day. These wind speeds meet the criteria for Wind Advisories,which may be issued.
Later Sunday evening, between 7 and 10 PM, a line of thunderstorms is expected to sweep across CNY from west to east. The primary threat from these storms will be damaging wind gusts. Following the initial line of storms, heavy and steady rain will continue overnight into Monday, raising concerns about potential flooding.
