Iowa Stages to Host Dramatic Portrayal of Legal Icon Clarence Darrow
A one-man play bringing to life the compelling story of Clarence Darrow, the famed American lawyer and civil rights advocate, will be performed across five Iowa cities this October. The Illinois Humanities Council production features actor Thomas Kohn as Darrow, delivering a performance described as both historically resonant and surprisingly humorous.
Darrow, a central figure in some of the 20th century’s most important legal battles – including the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial” – remains a relevant figure today as debates surrounding freedom of speech, justice, and the role of law in society continue. The play offers audiences a chance to engage wiht Darrow’s powerful arguments and complex character, prompting reflection on enduring American ideals. The production’s timing, as the nation approaches another election cycle, is expected to spark conversation about the ongoing struggle for social justice.
