City Opens New Guelph Pedestrian & Cycling Bridge

Guelph Opens New Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge Over Speed‌ River

Guelph, Ont., november 24, 2025 – A new accessible pedestrian ‍and⁤ cycling⁤ bridge connecting Emma Street and Earl Street officially opened today, enhancing active transportation options within the city. Mayor‌ Cam Guthrie joined community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of the project.

“This new bridge provides an crucial active transportation‍ link across the Speed river for surrounding neighbourhoods,‍ and also⁣ the wider community,”​ said Mayor Guthrie.‍ “By connecting ⁢people to the Downtown trail, this‌ bridge provides people with increased access to and from downtown​ Guelph.”

The 81-meter ⁤bridge is part of​ ongoing upgrades to ⁢the Speedvale‍ Avenue East corridor,aimed‌ at improving infrastructure for pedestrians,cyclists,drivers,and transit users. Kyle Gibson, ‍Acting General Manager, Engineering and⁢ Transportation Services, stated, “The City is excited​ to deliver this new bridge… We appreciate ​the community’s support and patience throughout the‍ bridge ⁤design and construction process.”

The City of Guelph engaged the⁤ community in the bridge’s design process, gathering​ input through an‌ online survey in October 2023. over 500 responses were ​received,and the⁣ steel girder‌ bridge design submitted by⁤ Entuitive and BT Engineering⁢ – ⁤the community’s preferred choice – was ultimately selected. Construction ⁣began in April and was completed by looby Construction.
